At our October program meeting, Soroptimist International of Woodland welcomed Cherie Schroeder, who shared an inspiring presentation about the Independent Living Program (ILP) — a vital resource for youth ages 14 to 21 transitioning out of foster care. The ILP helps young people gain the skills and confidence needed to live independently. Through mentoring, workshops, and financial support, the program empowers participants to pursue education, employment, and stable housing. As Cherie explained, many foster youth “age out” of the system without the family or financial support that most young adults rely on. The ILP bridges that gap by providing both guidance and tangible help. One of the most heartwarming parts of the program is how it celebrates milestones that many of us take for granted. |
The ILP ensures that foster youth are remembered and supported during graduations and holidays, providing gifts funded through community donations. These thoughtful gestures remind young people that they are seen, valued, and supported by their community. Cherie emphasized how even small contributions can make a big impact. Gift cards to local stores or restaurants allow youth to purchase what they need most — from groceries and school supplies to a simple meal out. These gifts represent more than financial help; they offer encouragement, dignity, and independence. Soroptimist International of Woodland encourages members and community partners to support this meaningful program. Donations of gift cards in any amount are deeply appreciated and go directly to local foster youth striving to build bright, independent futures. |
